Samuel Gompers, on behalf of the American Federation of Labor, has sent a special communication addressed to all organized labor urging support of the Johnson Immigration Bill in the following terms:
“A Bill of the greatest importance to the interests of humanity in general and labor in particular is pending in the Senate and House of Congress. The opposition to this bill is so trenchant, so active is danger that the opposition will succeed in preventing action at this session of Congress unless all organized labor and friends of humanity act immediately. The Bill is: “The Immigration Restriction Bill.”
“Therefore, we call upon you at once to we’re or write to your Congressmen, your Senators, and the President urging the passage of the Johnson Bill, with the Seamen’s amendment, which will prevent the Exclusion Laws from being partly nullified by ship owners sending excluded persons as fleamen into our ports.”
The letter concludes by calling the efforts against the bill “Cunning propaganda poisoning the minds of our people,” and lauding the bill.
