When the Berengaria left port last week many charming young mothers stood at the pier smiling—to vary the song—with tears in their eyes, and speeding affectionately a departing friend. The lucky recipient of all this pleasant attention was Dr. Leo Mishkin, the well known baby specialist, and we wonder whether all this display of feminine regret was due only to his geat medical skill, or whether the dashing man-about-town, which Dr. Mishkin is in his scant leisure time, had something to do with this great send-off.

Dr. Mishkin was one of a party of prominent physicians who sailed for Palestine to assist there at the laying of the cornerstone for the Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem. The other members of the group included Dr. Nathan Ratnoff, the well known President of the Board of Jewish Physicians, whose splendid work for Beth Israel Hospital deserves a whole bouquet of orchids, and Dr. J. J. Golub. While in Jerusalem, the three physicians will be entertained by Commissioner Wauchope, Dr. Judah L. Magnes, and other leading figures in Palestinian life.

The Misses Sarah and Felicia Lamport, who left on the Conte di Savoia last Saturday, are delightful examples of the distinctive charm a mixture of Judaism and Americanism can give to young womanhood. Both are Vassar girls, immensely popular, sport-loving, but devoted above all to serious intellectual and artistic pursuits. Last year they spent their summer at Oxford, and Oxford took them immediately to its very discriminating heart. This year they will attend the Malvern Dramatic Festival near London.

But though many of our most attractive women have left for European or American vacation resorts, our city yet possesses its quota of distinctive and interesting ladies. Anyone who strolls along Fifth avenue these sunny days may encounter the famed and admired winner of the Women’s Open Golf Championship at Glen Cove, Mrs. Leo G. Federman. Mrs. Federman makes her official summer home at 1016 Fifth avenue, but one sees her frequently at the Glen Oaks Country Club where she whets her steels and woods for future victories on the green. Mrs. Federman’s brilliant and ruthless play, combined with her gracious personality, have won her a special position in golfdom, where she is dubbed the Fair Woman of the Fairways.

Although every day brings to our envious ears news of the departure of fair vacationists, there are yet many others who return to us and make New York their summer headquarters. Prominent among the latter are Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Cohen, who, after a honeymoon in California, are staying at the Warwick for the rest of this month. Mrs. Cohen, who before her marriage was Miss Vera Riefkin of Washington, was one of the bright young people in the NRA offices in the capital. Marriage has evidently by no means dulled her brilliant mind, for she will continue her economic research next winter at Columbia University and supplement the degrees she received from Goucher with the lustre of a Ph.D.
