The necessity for unity, among both the American people and the United Nations, to defeat the Axis powers was stressed last night by Governor Lehman, addressing the celebration of the Society of Tammany of Columbian Order of the 166th anniversary of American independence in Tammany Hall.

Asserting that unity in the United States was essential, Governor Lehman condemned those who would invoke racial, religious or national hatreds and suspicions, adding that if we should weaken the fundamentals on which democracy is based we destroy democracy. He declared that with the help of God we would persevere to the end of a hard road, confident that victory would come to us and our Allies and that we would again build a world of peace and justice.
