All government Arab schools in Jerusalem went on strike today in sympathy with the Nablus school strike because of the alleged corporal punishment administered by Assistant Director of Education Farrell, to pupils who stayed away from the government schools last Wednesday, the day of the general strike. The teachers are not striking.
Director of Education Bowman, who is reported to have written an apology for the action of his Assistant, in a special interview granted the Jewish Telegraphic Agency correspondent this morning, said he believes that the Arab Executive did not want the Nablus strike and is not behind the Jerusalem walk-out which is due to agitators probably paid by the Moslem Youth Association.
Measures against the pupils who are remaining away from school have no: yet been decided upon. The Department of Education believes that the children are terrorized by hooligans.
Director Bowman ordered the Nablus government schools closed and is determined to keep them closed indefinitely until the Nablus notables are able to guarantee normal attendance. He believes this guaranty will be given today and the school reopened.
