A recommendation that the Israel Government appoint a representative to manage the affairs of the municipality of Jerusalem, which are in a chaotic state, was made here today in a report by a special investigating committee headed by Supreme Court Justice S.Z. Chesin. The inquiry was undertaken on instructions from Minister of Interior Israel Rokach.

The commission also recommended that a new system of electing the Mayor of Jerusalem be instituted in the near future. It held that political bickering was responsible for the current state of affairs.

Representatives of the religious parties, which are an important factor on the Jerusalem political scene, meeting here today expressed opposition to the proposal to change the municipal set-up. Religious leaders expressed the opinion that such changes would adversely affect the city’s religious organization.

The same meeting also went on record as opposing the Ministry of Interior’s plan to amalgamate the Tel Aviv suburbs of Ramath Gan and Bnei Brak into one municipal unit. Various religious leaders expressed their determination to preserve the religious character of Bnei Brak, an Orthodox township.
