Senator Meyer Ebner and Deputy Rosenberg questioned in an executive session of the Roumanian Senate the latest anti-Jewish excesses. Rosenberg spoke on behalf of all the Bessarabian deputies. Under-secretary of state Jonitesku reported that a strict inquiry was being made and that the guilty would be punished. Minister of Education Costachescu declared that the authorities were losing much valuable time in protecting Jews and that measures for Jewish protection were very expensive. He added that the recent disturbances in Kishinev were only a minor incident between groups of students and youths.
Minister Costachescu’s statement created a depressing effect. He further stated that the government was considering the question of the Jewish teacher’s seminaries. testing against the passivity of the police and demanding satisfactory measures of protection and measures against a repetition as well as punishment of the guilty. The kehillah also named a special commission to establish the amount of damages done. District director Moldavanu called a meeting of officers responsible for security in Kishinev and also of the supervisors of the theological faculty who promised to punish the participants and to close down the faculty if peace and a guarantee of order are not forthcoming.
