Governor G. Mennen Williams has issued a proclamation here designating the month of September 20 to October 20 as American Jewish Tercentenary Month in Michigan. The proclamation calls upon all citizens “to join in marking this period with public ceremonies and in other appropriate ways to take part in the observance of this great anniversary. ” Mayor Albert C. Cobo of Detroit has similarly proclaimed the same period as a Jewish Tercentenary Month in Detroit.

The Governor’s proclamation reviews the part played by American Jews in the upbuilding of this country and declares that “Michigan owes an incalculable debt to the Jews who have contributed substantially to the material, intellectual and spiritual progress of our state. ” Detroit’s celebrations of the American Jewish Tercentenary will be highlighted by a dinner at the Hotel Statler October 17. Philip Slomovitz, chairman of the Detroit Committee of 300 of the American Jewish Tercentenary, has announced that Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, of Cleveland, will be the principal speaker at the dinner.
