Gov. Leverett Saltonstall today ordered an official investigation of the repeated attacks on Jews in the streets of the Dorchester section of the city.
At the same time the Governor announced at a press conference that he intends to appoint today a joint committee of prominent Jews, Catholics and Protestants to act as an advisory body in mapping out plans to check anti-Jewish terror, Police Commissioner Timilty was notified by the governor that he will be held responsible if any further attacks on Jews occur.
The Massachusetts Civil Liberties Union today demanded that the Police Commissioner suspend at once a number of police officers charged with assaulting Jewish boys in Dorchester. while this demand was voiced by the Union’s chairman, Dr. Albert Coolidge, a police announcement disclosed that the Commissioner has assigned a special unit of high ranking officers to interview the victimized residents of Dorchester and arrest all known ringleaders of the hoodlums. Measures to protect the Dorchester Jewish residents were also taken by the police today in cooperation with the civilian population.
