Rabbi Jacob Kaplan, who was elected Grand Rabbi of France last Sunday, called at the French Foreign Ministry today to express French Jewry’s opposition to proposals for world calendar reform currently before the United Nations and to propose a calendar which would have the support of the Jews.
The Grand Rabbi said that the Jews oppose any system which calls for “blank” days in the calendar and which would thus change the position of the Sabbath in different years. Instead, he suggested a calendar of 364 days, with the insertion of a complete week every five years.
