The Great Synagogue of Frankfurt which was destroyed during the Nazi regime has been restored and will be re-opened this Wednesday for Rosh Hashanah services.
The synagogue was restored with the aid of American Jewish organizations. American Army Chaplain Joseph Miller will conduct the services because there is no German rabbi in Frankfurt now.
Ottomar Jeschka, a municipal councillor, addressing a demonstration of “Victims of Fascism” in Berlin, declared yesterday that of the 286,000 Jews who lived in Berlin before the Nazis, only 5,500 remained there today. He called on the Allies not to execute in Berlin any of the German war criminals on trial at Nuremberg. “Our dead comrades ask this,” he said, “as it would be a dishonor for them if these men were executed at the same spot as they.”
