The Government of Quebec has approved agreements between eight Jewish day schools and the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal which call for the payment by the school board of $300 per child attending Jewish day schools to cover the general studies program, The costs of the Hebrew program will be borne by parents and the community.
Mr. C.W. Dickson, representing the Quebec Minister of Education, made the announcement at a public meeting attended by over 1,000 Jewish parents which was sponsored by Canadian Jewish Congress to report on progress of the negotiations which had been conducted with the school board for several mouths. Mr. Monroe Abbey, president of Congress, expressed the gratification of the Jewish community with the decision, which will affect approximately 3,500 Jewish school children in the Montreal area.
