In a sensational decree published today, the Greek government ordered the restoration of a separate electoral college for Jews, announcing at the same time that an agreement had been reached between the government and the opposition party, led by former premier Elutherios, providing for the restoration of the electoral college for Jews and the reelection of President Alexander Zaimis.
The decree came as a terrific shock to the Jewish community in Greece, since the ink was hardly dry on the decree President Zaimis signed a few days ago abolishing the separate electoral college for Jews and praising the Greek Jews for their patriotism and their value to Greece.
At that time, the president declared that he would never consent to the political segregation of the Greek Jews. Other leaders of the government party made the same statement repeatedly.
