The Greek Government has asked the Israeli Government’s consent for the appointment of Joseph N. Mallah, a Jew, as its first representative to Israel, it was learned here today, Mallah, who has served as a member of the Greek parliament and as a Greek representative to the League of Nations, was active in the French resistance during the war.
Evidence that Greek abstention at the United Nations when Israel was voted into the World organization was causing dissension in the Greek coalition cabinet was seen here in a comment on the vote in Premier Themistocles Sophoulis’ newspaper, Vima. The paper described Greece’s abstention as “unfortunate” and openly criticized Foreign Minister Constantin Tsaldaris for this action.
