A Greek Jewish girl, Odette Sabetay, who last year obtained a college degree in nursery education in the United States, was forbidden to teach in Greek schools because she is not a member of the Greek Orthodox Church, it was reported here today.
Miss Sabetay obtained her degree at State Teachers College in Milwaukee under a scholarship from the National Council of Jewish Women. When she applied to the Ministry of Education here for a working permit, she was granted a license valid for Jewish schools only.
There is only one Jewish school–a primary school–in Athens which has no kindergarten facilities. Greek Jewish children of kindergarten age usually attend Greek schools. Intervention from several quarters on behalf of Miss Sabetay has so far brought no results.
