Food retailers went on a half-day sit-down strike here yesterday and closed their stores in protest against the imminent opening of a familiar signpost on the American economic scene, the supermarket. They claim that the introduction of supermarkets will put 10,000 grocers, vegetable dealers, butchers and fishmongers out of business.
The first of 20 American-style supermarkets is scheduled to open here early next month. The $500,000 behemoth, hitherto unknown in this land of small shopkeepers, is viewed with despair by retailers. On the other hand, the government hopes to find in it a device for cutting the cost of living.
