Broadway is here this week-end in all its glory to cheer up one of its favorites, Barney Ross, before his welterweight championship match with Jimmy McLarnin in New York a week from Tuesday. Under the sponsorship of Barney’s old pal and fellow Chicagoan, Abe Lyman, a large gathering of headliners are here to put on one of the greatest entertainments ever staged in this part of the country. Lyman’s entire orchestra of twenty-five men arrived this morning following a triumphant two-week stay at the Capitol Theatre. Sid Gary, Milton Berle, Maralyn Mack and many other theatrical notables are also here.

This is the second time that Abe Lyman has been up here with his band. Last Spring before Barney’s successful encounter with the present title-holder, the lanky leader who is also Ross’ favorite orchestra leader, brought up his band and a large show. This return engagement is therefore in the nature of a lucky omen to the entire camp who feel that Ross will repeat his triumph and regain his former title.

Barney looks and feels swell. He’s enjoying the training routine here so much that he’s looking forward to coming back after the title fight. Not to train, but to get in some golf. He has taken lessons from Scotty Thyne, Grossinger pro, and wants to clip about fifteen strokes from his score.

Jack Dempsey will arrive Sunday.
