Ferndale, N. Y., May 25th: Barney Ross left here today for his championship encounter with Jimmy McLarnin on Tuesday. But he was hardly the same Barney who arrived three weeks ago to commence the training grind. These weeks in the invigorating, healthy mountain climate, following a careful training routine, had put him in the very pink of condition and he departed bubbling over in health and vitality. As the likable Chicagoan left, he made one significant remark: “Everybody ought to do this at least once a year. People take care of our machinery, their cars and their property. But their most important possession, their own bodies, often suffer by neglect because they refuse to take time off to tune up. That’s something I’m going to remember long after I hang up the boxing gloves. And it will always be to a place like Grossinger’s that I’ll go— that is, if there is another place like Grossinger’s near my home town, Chicago.”
Next on the list of occasions here is the Decoration Day week-end party which will inaugurate the season officially starting next Wednesday. A new staff of entertainers and sports directors, along with many of the old favorites are already on hand planning all those treats and vacation surprises that you’re going to enjoy this summer.
A novel golf tournament to pick the Grossinger champion is now being planned. More details soon.
