The declaration by Drummond Shiels before the Mandates Commission at Geneva yesterday removes anxiety which the British government’s recent Palestine policy has raised says the Manchester Guardian today in an editorial expressing satisfaction with the declaration.

The White Paper and the acceptance of the Shaw Commission’s conclusions were interpreted as a whittling down of British obligations, the Guardian points out and it therefore “welcomes Dr. Shiels’s assurances, although it could have been avoided if his generous acknowledgements would have been added to Lord Passfield’s tepid White Paper. It is a pity that the government should not have made this declaration earlier without the stimulus of strong outside criticism.”
