On the recommendation of some of the country’s most distinguished physicians and psychiatrists, Dr. Manfred S. Guttmacher, son of the late Rabbi Adolf Guttmacher, was appointed yesterday medical officer of the Supreme Bench of Baltimore. In order to take the post, Dr. Guttmacher plans to resign as assistant in clinical neurology at Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Guttmacher, who was born in Baltimore thirty-two years ago, received his bachelor of arts degree from Johns Hopkins in 1919 when he was 21. Four years later he received the doctor of medicine degree. For two years he studied abroad, having been awarded the Emmanuel Libman European fellowship. Returning to the United States in 1927, Dr. Guttmacher became assistant medical officer of the Boston Psychopathic Hospital, serving simultaneously as psychiatrist of the John Baker Foundation, Boston. In these posts he gained considerable training in legal medicine and criminal psychology. Since 1928 Dr. Guttmacher has been assistant in clinical neurology at Johns Hopkins and psychiatrist for the Mental Hygiene Society of Maryland.
