Strong verbal attacks on the Haavara, Palestine office for the execution of the Palestine-Germany transfer agreement, were delivered at yesterday’s meeting of the British Board of Jewish Deputies, a section of the Board demanding abolition of the office.
The Board deferred action pending a joint meeting of its Palestine Committee with the British Section of the Jewish Agency for Palestine.
Haavara, which aids German emigrants to Palestine to bring a portion of their capital in the form of German goods, has recently been the target of several sharp attacks based on the charges that it has acted as an agent for Germany in selling German goods throughout the Near East.
J. O. Smeller announced that receipts in the appeal for the Polish Jews have exceeded $120,000. A scheme was drafted with the aid of Dr. Bernhard Kahn, European director of the American Joint Distribution Committee for raising a total of $750,000 for the rehabilitation of Polish Jewry, $200,000 to be raised throughout the British Empire, $75,000 to be contributed by the J.D.C. 1,500,000 zlotys to be loaned by the Polish Government at one and a half per cent interest and the balance to be raised by the Polish Jews.
