Hadassah’s twenty-fourth annual convention closed this evening with a banquet after the 1,200 delegates had adopted a $250,000 quota for the youth Aliyah movement next year, half of which was pledged from the floor in a spontaneous outburst of pledges
The unprecedented demonstration occurred yesterday after a Youth Aliyah luncheon where the quota — two-and-a-half times last year’s goal — was accepted. a wave of emotion swept the gathering after stories of oppression and heroism among children and refugees had been recounted. Mrs. David B. Greenberg, chairman of the Youth Aliyah committee, announced that Hadassah had raised a total of $590,000 for the movement in three years. Of this, Eddie cantor, the radio and screen actor, raised $89,000.
Dr. Nahum Goldmann, Jewish Agency representative at Geneva, addressing the banquet, asserted that Jews were “already the masters of our fate” in Palestine and proclaimed “the triumph of Zionism Already achieved in its foundations.” Dr. Israel Goldstein, president of the Jewish National Fund, said at the afternoon session that land acquisition was a fundamental condition to keeping open Palestine’s gates.
