Charles Orde Wingate, 16-year-old son of the British war hero Gen. Orde Wingate, who died in an air crash in Burma, today accepted a Haganah medal awarded posthumously to his father.

Wingate was a British officer who befriended the Jewish community of Palestine in the days before and during the late World War, and who helped train the self-defense cadres which as the Haganah, protected the Jewish community against Arab massacres. He helped put the community on a war footing to resist the anticipated Nazi breakthrough by Rommel in North Africa.
