Speaking at the Anglo-Jewish Association meeting Sunday, Haham Gaster declared facts had shown that he was right in the attitude he had taken on the question of nationality for the Jews of Roumania. He had always insisted, he said, that it was unwise to refer to the minority clauses in approaching the Government. Roumania does not like it, he said.
The meeting approved grants in aid for Jewish schools in Bombay. Beirut and Damascus, as well as for the Evelina de Rothschild School in Jerusalem.
Reports submitted show the Bombay school had 450 pupils. As to the Beirut school which is supported by the Alliance Israelite, by the French government and by parents’ fees, besides the Anglo-Jewish Association, the directorate of the school is mixed and the languages of instructions are French, Arabic, Hebrew and English.
Two schools are maintained i.. Damascus, one for boys and one for girls, the latter having 401 pupils.
