Seventy-five scholarships for the vocational training of Israeli young persons were established this afternoon in honor of the 75th birthday of Isaac Hamlin, a leader of the Labor Zionist movement in the United States for the past half century and founder and first national secretary of the Israel Histadrut Campaign. The scholar ships, funds for which were contributed by friends of Mr. Hamlin, were announced at a luncheon in his honor attended by some 500 representatives of Jewish and labor organization.
Speakers at the luncheon included: Rep. Ogden Reid, New York Republican and former U.S. Ambassador to Israel; Ephraim Evron, Israeli Minister to the United States; Jacob S. Potofsky, president of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America; Judge Samuel S. Leibowitz of New York; Zev Barash, U.S. representative of the Histadrut; Samuel Bonchek, president of the Farband Labor Zionist Order; Dr. Sol Stein, executive director of the National Committee for Labor Israel; and Israel Stolarsky, associate director.
Cabled greetings to Mr. Hamlin were received from Israel President Zalman Shazar Prime Minister Levi Eshkol; former Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion; Mrs. Golda Meir, secretary general of Mapai and former Foreign Minister; and Aharon Becker, general secretary of Histadrut.
