Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold is still making “current efforts” to solve the impasse concerning Israel’s insistence on freedom of shipping through the Suez Canal, it was learned from Israel delegation sources here today.
Delegation sources, referring to an unusually long conference held yesterday between Mr. Hammarskjold and Israeli representatives, said the talk involved “an exchange of views concerning the Secretary General’s current efforts regarding the Inge Toft.”
The Inge Toft is the Danish freighter which has been held by Egyptian authorities at Port Said since May, when the ship was halted upon entering the Suez Canal with a cargo from Haifa consigned to the Far East.
Participating in the latest of the long series of talks on the Inge Toft issue with Mr. Hammarskjold were Yosef Tebkah, acting permanent representative of Israel here, and Arieh Eilan, a member of the Israel delegation. Sitting in with Mr. Hammarskjold was his executive assistant, Andrew W. Cordier. The conference lasted more than an hour.
