Secretary General Dag Hammarskjold today resumed talks with British officials on his visit here on two principal problems, the Middle East and the South African apartheid policy.
The United Nations official met for two hours Friday with British Foreign Secretary Selwyn Lloyd and will confer next with Sir Roger Stevens, the Deputy Undersecretary of State for Middle East Affairs. Prior to his talks with Mr. Hammarskjold, Mr. Lloyd met for an hour Friday with Arthur Louric, Israel’s Ambassador to Britain.
British sources here indicated that the Foreign Secretary received a report from the UN official on the recent Suez Canal crisis and on Mr. Hammarskjold’s tentative plans for a modus vivendi on the issue within the UN framework.
While Britain has given no official response to the new Suez crisis created by American maritime union picketing of the Egyptian ship, the Cleopatra, in New York harbor, it was believed that Mr. Lloyd conveyed to the Secretary General Britain’s stand for freedom of navigation for ships of all nations through the Suez Canal.
