Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjold asserted today at a press conference that, as far as he is concerned, the Security Council’s past resolutions regarding freedom of shipping through the Suez Canal are very much on his mind. “I have certainly not forgotten them,” he declared.
The principal Council resolution concerned is the one adopted September 1, 1951, which resulted from an Israel complaint against Egypt’s blockade of Suez shipping bound to and from Israel, That resolution put the Council clearly on record as to the international character of the Canal and insisted that Egypt must keep the waterway open to all shipping of all nations.
