At the direction of Attorney General Daugherty, United States Assistant District Attorney Morris Streusand yesterday instituted proceedings to cancel the citizenship papers of Louis N. Hammerling, former President of the Association of Foreign Language Newspapers here. Hammerling, who in 1922 became a Polish citizen and is a Senator in the Polish Parliament, arrived here yesterday from Europe on the Rochambeau.
Hammerling, who traveled on a Polish diplomatic passport, was met at the pier by Department of Justice agents, who questioned him, but did not interfere with his landing.
Hammerling said he represented the district of Sanislau in the upper house in Poland and was a member of the Committee on Finance and Foreign Affairs. He was here on a vacation he added. He denied
rumors that he would solicit funds for a political campaign in Poland.
