The speedy development of the city of Tel Aviv in Palestine has raised the question in the House of Commons of establishing a harbor for the city.
In reply to a question by Major H. A. Proctor, Sir Philip Cunliffe Lister, Colonial Secretary, said that steps had been taken to improve the harbors at Haifa and Jaffa. He added that these improvements will be sufficient for Palestine’s needs for a good many years in spite of the growth of Tel Aviv.
A harbor for Tel Aviv has been tentatively suggested, Sir Philip said, but he has not received any such proposal from High Commissioner of Palestine, Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope. This indicated, he said, that the government was not contemplating a harbor for the city.
Barnet Janner and Colonel Wedgwood posed questions to the Colonial Secretary regarding the results of plans to set up an aerodrome at Ludd, which would be of distinct benefit to Tel Aviv in conjunction with the railway depot to be built there. Sir Philip said that he and the High Commissioner are giving the “most careful consideration” to the recommendations of the local committee.
