Harry Silver, 58, outstanding Wisconsin auctioneer and former chief of police in Manila, died Monday in Chicago at the Edward Hines Hospital. Interment was at Spring Hill (orthodox) cemetery, with veterans providing a military escort.
One of Wisconsin’s most colorful figures, he had been an alderman at Gilbert, a fire chief at Eveleth and an assistant fire chief at Gilbert.
He served in the Spanish-American War and was at the front in both the Philippines and Cuba. He was an active worker in veterans’ organizations and had served on the state executive council of the Army and Navy Union.
Coming to this country from Russia at the age of twelve, he was a professional runner in his youth, often running for various universities under assumed names before the days of eligibility rules.
