Arrests of Havana Jews on charges that they are manufacturing bombs for the use of the opponents of the Grau San Martin regime, and firing from the roofs on Cuban army patrols, are continuing.
The Jewish quarter is in a state of continual terror. Army patrols search the Jewish section night and day for hidden arms which the “Jew-polakos”, as Jews are known in Cuba, are alleged to have hidden. There have been numerous cases of robberies. Jewish homes, stores, and even Jews on the streets, have been robbed.
The Jewish merchant, Jacob Altshul, was taken away by an army detachment, told that he was going to be shot, and only released when he gave the soldiers forty dollars, it was learned.
Another Jew, whose name is Blank, is reported to have been severely beaten by soldiers in his own home. The soldiers are alleged to have robbed him of a number of gold articles and a sum of money.
The residents of the Havana suburb, Buenavista, are collecting signatures on a petition to deport all the Jewish merchants of the suburb.
The juridical committee of the Havana Jewish community visited the Adjutant General of the Cuban Army, Velasco. He listened patiently to the stories of the mistreatment of the Jews and promised to interest himself in the unfortunate and undeserved plight of the Havana Jews.
