Because he opposed the Italian Government’s anti-Semitic policy, Marcello Campaner, leading non-Jewish Italian in Turkey, has lost his post as head of the Turkish branch of the Italian Fascist Party, it was disclosed here today.
Signor Campaner, a Commander of the Crown of Italy, was head of the Italian Fascists in Turkey since his arrival here 17 years ago. As a result of his stand, he may also lose his position as general manager of the Adriatic, the lloyd Triestino and other leading State transport concerns which he represented.
It was learned that ten days ago, signor Campaner introduced Ambassador DI Pepo, new envoy to turkey, to the Italian community here, and during an address the Ambassador praised the Italian Government’s new racial policy. After the ceremony, Signor Campaner privately pointed out to the Ambassador the inopportuneness of his speech since the majority of his audience comprised Italian Jews. The Ambassador reported the incident by cable to Rome, and Signor Campaner’s dismissal followed.
