Hearings on the collective punishments for Safed are scheduled to begin January 8 with District Commissioner Colville of Haifa presiding. The hearings will determine the guilt of the Arabs and the amount they will have to pay for the destruction of the Jewish quarter of Safed. Arab sources here report that the Mufti of Safed is touring the neigh-boring villages to collect money for the “riot victims,” but it is rumored here that he is actually organizing resistance to the collective punishments.
