On the occasion of Chanukah, the Jewish Feast commemorating the victory of the Maccabeans in ancient Judea, and which begins on Friday night, December 23rd, the Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society, through its President Abraham Herman, has issued a special appeal for needed support.
“The Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society has taken upon itself the task of giving food to the hungry and lodging to the homeless,” Mr. Herman declares. “In the last eleven months the Society has provided no less than 407,451 meals and 40,295 nights’ shelter. Our resources have been taxed to the uttermost by reason of this additional burden upon the Society which is solely dependent voluntary contributions, having no endowment fund. We appeal to the kind-hearted in the community and to those who are still better situated to come to the aid of their helpless brothers and sisters by making it possible for Hias to continue its relief activities. The calls upon the Society are insistent and ever increasing. Funds are immediately required. We sincerely hope that this call will not go unheeded.”
