The United States Department of Agriculture has awarded a $52,500 research grant to the Hebrew University’s faculty of agriculture at Rehovoth for a project to develop biological warfare against harmful insects. The faculty is headed by Dr. David Rosen. The project envisages the use of a certain species of wasp to destroy the “coccid scale,” an insect harmful to plants. The use of one insect specie against another is an alternative to the use of chemical insecticides which have harmful effects on the environment. The Rehovoth institute has already scored some successes with the method.
