Hebrew Union College 1929 Annual Contains Important Jewish Scholarship Contributions

The Hebrew Union College Annual for 1929, the sixth volume in this series, has just appeared from the press. The editors of the Annual are Dr. David Philipson, chairman; President Julian Morgenstern; Prof. Jacob Z. Lauterbach, and Dr. Sheldon H. Blank, secretary. The volume contains a number of important contributions to Jewish and general scholarship, five of the articles being written by members of the faculty of the Hebrew Union College and three by scholars in England and Germany.

The first title of the volume, entitled “The Gates of Righteousness,” is contributed by Dr. Morgenstern and sketches the history of the many interesting Jewish, Christian and Moslem traditions concerning the so-called Golden Gate of the Temple area in Jerusalem The gate is in the Eastern wall of the present enclosure of the Mosque of Omar and has been sealed for many years. The article was read by Dr. Morgenstern before the International Congress of Orientalists, Oxford, England, in 1928.

Other articles in the Annual are by Rabbi Bernard Bamberger of Albany, N. Y., who writes on “Fear and Love of God in the Old Testament,” by Rev. Frank Gavin of the General Theological Seminary in New York, who discusses “Rabbinic Parallels in Early Church Orders”; by Dr. J. Z. Lauterbach, professor of Talmud at the Hebrew Union College, who writes on “The Pharisees and Their Teachings”; by Prof. A. Marmorstein, professor of Talmud at Jews College, London, who writes on “The Background of the Hagaddah”; by Prof. V. Aptowitzer of Vienna, who writes in German on “Arabasch-Juedische Schoepfungstheorieen,” or Arabic and Jewish legends of the creation; and other articles by Dr. Moses Gaster of London; Prof. Solomon Gandz of the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary and Yeshiva College, New York, and Dr. Israel Bettan and Dr. Henry Englander of the faculty of the Hebrew Union College.
