Ten rabbis who in peace time would have been graduated next June, were ordained at the Hebrew Union College last Saturday and will replace rabbis who have left their pulpits to serve in the armed forces as chaplains.
Honorary Doctorates of Hebrew Letters were awarded to Professor Louis Ginzberg of the Jewish Theological Seminary, New York, on his seventieth birthday, as “the outstanding Jewish scholar of this generation,” and to Roger Williams Strauss, New York, past president of the National Federation of Temple Brotherhoods.
Honorary Doctorates of Divinity were conferred on four alumni; Rabbi Issac-Landman, editor in chief of the Universal Jewish Encyclopedia, director of the Academy of Adult Jewish Education, minister of Temple Beth Elohim, Brooklyn; Dr. Nathan Krass, rabbi emeritus of Temple Emanu-El, New York; Rabbi Harold F. Reinhart, Barton Street Synagogue, London, and Rabbi Samuel S. Mayerberg, a leader in civic reform in Kansas City. Academic Doctorates in Hebrew Letters were awarded to Rabbi Theodore S. Ross, Brooklyn, and Rabbi Lou H. Silberman, Jr., San Francisco, of the faculty.
