Some 200 overseas delegates began arriving here today to join another 200 Israelis for the annual meeting of the Hebrew University Board of Governors which will begin the university’s 50th anniversary celebration Wednesday. On that day, the board will hold a special session on the university’s Mount Scopus campus and afterwards will unveil a Jubilee Plaque near the amphitheater where 50 years ago Lord Balfour proclaimed the opening of the university.
Among the overseas delegates are 85 Americans headed by Dr. Max M. Kampelman, president of the American Friends of the Hebrew University, and Sam Rothberg, chairman of the university’s International Board of Governors, “We are very proud that such a large delegation is representing the American Jewish community on this historic occasion,” Dr. Kampelman said. “So soon after the terrible terrorist massacre in Tel Aviv, it is an opportunity for us to demonstrate our solidarity with the people of Israel and to let them know that they have our unqualified support whether in joy or in sorrow.”
The board meeting, which ends Friday, will discuss research and development, student affairs, finance, endowment funds and academic matters. The Jubilee celebrations began last night with a concert at the Binyanei Ha-coma where Isaac Stern played Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra.
