Dr. Benjamin Mazar, president of the Hebrew University, was received by Pope Pius XII in his summer residence at Castel Gandolfo and presented the Pontiff with a recent Hebrew University publication on the Dead Sea Scrolls. The Pope thanked Dr. Mazar and expressed great interest in the work of the University.
Dr. Mazar also conferred with Cardinal Tisserant, the head of the Oriental Rites Congregation. At a ceremony in the Israel Embassy, the educator presented an honorary membership in the Oriental Institute of the Hebrew University to Giorgo Levi Della Vida of Rome University, a noted Italian Jewish scholar. Present for the ceremony were the president of Rome University and representatives of the Vatican’s Biblical Institute.
Dr. Mazar was scheduled to return to Israel after studying Phoenician remains in Spain He also met Jewish leaders in London, Paris and Switzerland to discuss Hebrew University problems and plans for completion of the campus and academic expansion. A new Committee of Hebrew University Friends was established in France whose members included the Sorbonne University rector and Guy de Rothschild as president.
