The Military Government today banned a political rally by Arabs in Hebron but at the same time lifted some of the restrictions imposed over a month ago on the West Bank college town of Bir Zeit, north of Ramallah. Shops were dlowed to reopen and telephone service was restored but Beir Zeit University, shut down by the Israeli authorities on May 2, remained closed.
Mayor Fahed Kawassme of Hebron said the rally was called as a demonstration of solidarity with the Arabs of Nablus in their protest against the new Gush Emunim settlement of Alon Moreh and as a protest by Hebronites against “the provocative behavior of the residents of Kiryat Arba.” Kiryat Arba is a Jewish township established on the outskirts of Hebron populated by Orthodox Jews and is a stronghold of the Gush Emunim. Several Kiryat Arba women have been occupying the old Hadassah building in Hebron for the past month. The Military Government said it would not allow Rabbi Meir Kahane, leader of the Kach faction, to enter Hebron to visit the women.
