The 175th anniversary of the birth of Heinrich Heine was marked last week in four countries–West and East Germany, London, where he lived for several years, and in Paris where he lived and died on Feb. 17, 1856. The Allgemeine Wochenzeitung, the Journal of the Jewish community in West Germany, marked the anniversary with a front-page editorial acknowledging Heine as one of the great sons of German Jewry.
