Henryk Glicenstein, World Famous Jewish Artist, Arrives in United States

Henryk Glicenstein, internationally known Jewish sculptor, arrived on Friday on the steamer Duilio. An exhibition of the artist’s work will be held under the patronage of the Italian Ambassador, Nobile Giacomo de Martino, and the Hon. Jan Ciechanowski, Polish Minister, at the Anderson Galleries from March 26 to April 7.

The sculptor, who has never before been to America, has come as the “Art Ambassador” of Italy, and brought an official letter from Prince Potensiani, Governor of Rome, to Mayor Walker, who will receive him at City Hall. He will be received Sunday by the Italian Ambassador, and will leave Monday for a reception in Washington given by the Polish Minister.

A committee headed by Rockwell Kent is sponsoring the exhibition. The committee includes: Chester Aldrich, Frank Crowninshield, Herbert L. Satterlee, Mrs. Harry Payne Whitney, Nathan Straus, Judge Julian W. Mach, Herman Bernstein, Col. Michael Friedsam, James N. Rosenberg, Guilio Gatti-Casazza, Abram I. Elkus, John J. Freshi, Louis Bamberger, Irving Lehman, Mitchel May, Grover M. Moscowitz, Walter N. Rothschild, Bishop William T. Manning, Dr. David de Sola Pool, Lionello Perera, Mrs. Irma L. Lindheim and the Italian and Polish Consuls in New York.

The Honorary European Committee sponsoring the exhibition includes Lord Balfour, Campbell Dodgson, of the British Museum, M. D’Amelio, Chief Justice of Italy, Prince Don Urbano-Barbarini, Settimo Bocconi, Director of the Museum Capitolini, Conservatori, Mussolini; Prince Giovanelli, Duke Francesco Caffarelli, Corrado Ricci, Adolfo Mancini, Italy’s famous painter, Giovani Gentile, Adolfo Venturi, Italian Senator, and Prince Gelasio Caotani, former Ambassador from Italy to the United States.

Henryk Glicenstein, was born in Turek, Poland, on May 24, 1870. His early education was at the Academy of Art in Munich, after which he won the “Prix de Rome,” and settled in Italy. At a recent exhibition of his works in Rome, he was acclaimed Italy’s greatest living sculptor. At that time, the King of Italy conferred upon him the Order of Cavalier of the Crown of Italy.

Miss Sarah Fisher, former Montreal Jewish girl, a prima donna at the Opera Comique in Paris, has been named an Associate of the Royal College of Music in London, Miss Fisher has been chosen to play the leading role in Mozart’s “Figaro,” at the Mozart festival which is to be held in Paris this May.
