Herbert R. Abeles, prominent Jewish communal leader, and former president of the Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds. died here at his home last night. He was 62.
In addition to his work with the CJFWF, Mr. Abeles served twice as general chairman of the United Jewish Appeal of Essex County, N.J., as well as on the cabinet of the national UJA. He was also a founder and former president of the Kessler Institute of Rehabilitation, and formerly a member of the New Jersey Commission on Displaced Persons.
