The vast possibilities for the future of mankind which have been opened up by America’s cooperation in the war effort were stressed by Chief Rabbi J. H. Hertz in addressing a large congregation at the Great Synagogue in today’s special intercession service.
Pointing out that the peaceful people had been slow to realize that they were “face to face with a new breed of men, totally devoid of pity, honor and conscience,” Dr. Hertz extolled the successes in Greece and Africa by which, he said, “the end of Italy’s unholy Roman empire has now been rendered certain, while the wonderful cooperation of America opens up vast possibilities for the future of the whole of mankind.” He stressed the necessity after the war of a statesmanship able to make the “deluded enemy peoples” ashamed of what they had done, thus ensuring lasting peace.
