The Herut Party today held a mass meeting in the center of Jerusalem in protest against the latest United Nations plan for the internationalization of the Jerusalem area. The rally was addressed by various party leaders including its deputies in the Knesset.
In Tel Aviv last night, the Herut deputies, at a press conference, voiced a new veiled threat that the internationalization of Jerusalem would call forth a Jewish underground movement in opposition. Although they denied that they were planning to organize such a movement at this time, the leaders of the Herut–the legal party which succeeded the Irgun Zvai Leumi–stated that underground movements do not arise as a result of resolutions but “through conditions such as those now created by the United Nations.”
The deputies also called on the government and the nation not to establish any contacts with Dr. Alberto Gonzalez Fernandez, Colombian diplomat who was recently appointed the U.N. representative in Jerusalem. The Herut leaders warned the government against compromising on the issue of the internationalization of Jerusalem, adding that “any pact or agreement (on this matter) which is signed by the government will not be binding on any future government.” Announcing that the Herut Party was transferring its headquarters to Jerusalem, the deputies called on the government to proclaim the city its capital and move all government offices there.
