The Herut party, which joined the broadened coalition government just before the Six-Day War, announced its intention of remaining in the Government to counter the influence of several Cabinet ministers it said favored a general withdrawal by Israel from occupied Arab territories.
Aryeh Ben Eliezer, Deputy Speaker of the Knesset, told a meeting of the Gahal (the Herut and Liberal Party coalition,) that it was the party’s policy to exclude East Jerusalem, the West Bank of the Jordan, the Gaza Strip and the Golan heights in Syria from peace negotiations. The only negotiable items are the Suez Canal and Sinai peninsula, he said.
