More than 600 persons crowded the McMillin Theater at Columbia University here last night when the Theodor Herzl Institute conducted a colorful meeting as a salute to Israel’s recently elected President, Zalman Shazar. The principal address, devoted mainly to a personal evaluation of her relationship with “an old friend and colleague in Zionism and labor, ” was delivered by Mrs. Golda Meir, Israel’s Foreign Minister. She told of her 40 years of close work with Mr. Shazar.
Dr. Emanuel Neumann, chairman of the Jewish Agency-American Section, was chairman of the event. Leading members of the Jewish Agency executive in this country were on the dais. The event had been arranged with the cooperation of Rabbi Isidor Hoffman, a member of the Columbia University administration and counselor to Jewish students at the university.
Excerpts from President Shazar’s speeches and writings were presented dramatically by Rabbi Chaim Freed, director of the Jewish Drama Society, and Cantor Nathaniel Entin, while a documentary dealing with Mr. Shazar’s life was given by Miss Sara Feinstein, program administrator of the Theodor Herzl Institute. The evening marked the season’s opening of a long series of events to be conducted this year by the Institute.
