Chaim Herzog, Israel’s Ambassador to the United Nations, charged that the speech by Ismail Fahmy, Egypt’s Ambassador to the UN, to the General Assembly “was a flagrant violation of the interim agreement signed between Israel and Egypt in September, 1975.” Herzog said that the parties agreed to “deescalate” political warfare and that today’s speech by Fahmy was an “escalation” of political warfare between Israel and Egypt.
The Israeli envoy noted that Fahmy’s statement came at the time of vital talks in Washington and New York between Mideast foreign ministers and American officials and accused the Egyptian of creating an atmosphere of “intransigence” instead of contributing to moderation. “It is time for an end to Egyptian double-talk,” Herzog said, pointing out that there is a discrepancy between Egyptian President Anwar Sadat’s soothing statements to the U.S. media and the extremism as reflected in Fahmy’s speech today.
