Israel must “strike back” at all countries–including Libya–that harbor terrorists, but preferably the international community should impose effective “political sanctions,” in the opinion of Maj. Gen. Chaim Herzog, the commentator and former commander of the Israel Defense Forces in the West Bank.
In an interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, he said it would be a “big mistake” to discuss anti-terrorist action in advance, but said he was “convinced that Libya must be made to pay just like any other Arab country for the maintenance of (terrorist) bases.”
Herzog, chairman of Keter Publishing House, publishers of the new Encyclopaedia Judaica, added that the terrorist movement has “failed,” and “from a political and military point of view we don’t have to worry about it in any way.” He predicted that war with Egypt will not occur “in the foreseeable future,” because President Anwar Sadat is “weak.”
Regarding the American elections, Israelis, he noted, are interested in “policy, not politics.” While they are not satisfied with “all aspects” of current American policy, “it has changed in the past and can change in the future,” Herzog said.
