The Diet of Hesse on Saturday rejected a Nazi motion calling for the prohibition of schechita, the Jewish ritual method of slaughtering animals for food.

The majority of the deputies in the Diet, who voted against the Nazi motion, asserted that it was prompted not by the desire to prevent cruelty to animals but by hatred of the Jews.

The Diet resolved that schechita be maintained to conform with the needs of the Jews. Slaughtering in Hesse, it was pointed out, has been tremendously reduced and the prohibition of schechita would impose additional hardships upon the farmers.
